Specialist neurosurgeon at Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital, Mehashi Surasinghe Wijeratne, and Management Assistant at the hospital, Kekulandala Liyanage Indika, were arrested by the Commission on 17th June 2025. A resident of the Kadawatha area, Muthukuda Arachchige Nimal Ranjith Muthukuda, who worked at the neurosurgeon’s illegally run private institute, was also arrested here.
The Neurosurgeon was arrested for the offence of corruption by instructing patients to purchase EVDs and VP SHUNTs required for neurosurgery from outside institutions run by the specialist neurosurgeon and the hospital staff, thereby causing a loss to patients and an unlawful benefit to the neurosurgeon or an outside party. She has also caused a loss to the hospital by failing to order those items through the hospital’s supply division.
The price of an EVD at the hospital’s medical supplies division was approximately Rs. 17,500/- in 2022, and the current average market price of the item is around Rs. 46,500/-. Patients had to incur a cost of around Rs. 120,000/- to Rs. 250,000/- when they purchased the item from outside parties referred by the relevant neurosurgeon. Nearly 300 patients who underwent such surgeries have been identified so far, and statements have already been recorded from 77 patients. Investigations reveal that a significant number of patients who underwent these surgeries have died. Patients who gave the statements alone have incurred a loss of nearly Rs. 30 million.
