Deputy Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council arrested over allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 3,000,000/-

Based on a complaint lodged by a resident of Pannipitiya, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested the Deputy Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, Mohomadu Moinudeen Mohommad Ashardeen, over allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs. 3 million. According to the complainant, the suspect has told him that the Kurunegala Municipal Council intends to cancel the tender he had secured for cleaning and maintaining the Kurunegala bus stand and shopping complex due to non-payment of water bills amounting to Rs. 4.0 million for the lavatory system, and demanded a bribe of Rs. 5.0 million to prevent the cancellation. 

Furthermore, he has demanded an additional monthly bribe of Rs. 0.5 million to allow the tender activities to continue without obstruction. Subsequently, the demanded bribe was reduced to Rs. 3.0 million, and the arrest was made on 08.05.2026 while accepting the Rs. 3.0 million at a hotel in Battaramulla.
