A Police Officer has been sentenced for 4 years Rigorous Imprisonment for bribery.

A Police Officer who has solicited Rs.3000.00 of bribe from a motorcyclist has been convicted and sentenced for 4 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.20,000.00


When the accused was serving in Girandurukotte Police station, he has demanded Rs.3000.00 bribe from a motorcyclist who met with an accident with a 6-year-old child.
The Police Officer had insisted unless bribe is paid, he would take action against the motorcyclist.
On receipt a complain to the CIABOC hot line number 1954 by the motorcyclist, the police officer was arrested while accepting the bribe during a raid conducted by the CIABOC team of investigators.
During the trial, Counsel appeared for the CIABOC requested to consider the unlawful action, without considering the amount of bribe in order to set an example to other officers who deal with road traffic controlling as they must act responsibly to secure a safe transportation system in the country.
Having heard the case by Learned High Court Judge, Mr. Gihan Kulathunga, convicted the accused stating that, bribery has become a cancer in the society and it should be cured.
Raid was conducted by the authorized investigator of CIABOC IP Abeysinghe under the guidance and instructions of Director Investigations SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri and Prosecution was conducted by the Assistant Director Legal Ms. Manodhi Hewawasam under the guidance of Commission and DG CIABOC – President Counsel Mr. Sarath Jayamanne.
