Causing financial losses to the government by fraudulent registration of vehicles released without customs clearance

After unearthing the fraudulent registration of nearly 400 vehicles by the Department of Motor Traffic, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption have been able to uncover specific details of 156 vehicles.

Majority of them fall under the luxury vehicle category, and has caused a significant Customs duty loss to the government by avoiding the proper procedures for their release from the Customs. Further, it has delayed several years for their fraudulent registration at the Department of Motor Traffic and thereby caused another significant loss to the government due to receive as taxes for the relevant period. Accordingly, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has seized 07 of those vehicles and has taken 6 into their custody on Court order to hand over to Customs. Action has been taken to hand over 05 to Sri Lanka Customs.

The Commission has also initiated legal action against 07 individuals, including 05 officers of the Department of Motor Traffic.
