Based on a complaint made by a person of Gonagolla, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested a Beat Forest Officer and a Forest Field Assistant on allegations of accepting bribes of Rs. 40,000/- and Rs. 60,000/- respectively. The two suspects have solicited and accepted the bribe in exchange for not taking legal action against the complainant for sand mining in the Samangala forest reserve and maintaining a cattle barn there. The two officers attached to the Ampara Wildlife Office were arrested on 18.12.2024.

Based on a complaint made by a resident of Gonahena in Kadawatha, the Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested a woman in Thalathuouya on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 350,000/-. The woman has demanded the bribe from the complainant to act as an intermediary in getting the work done from the Land Reforms Commission for the complainant to obtain the land, “Kirimetiyawattha” in the Pathahewaheta Divisional Secretariat in the Kandy district, for cultivation purposes. The Investigation Officers arrested the woman at 11.30 a.m. on 11.12.2024 at the car park near Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.

Based on a complaint made by a resident of Weerawila, Pannegamuwa, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested an Office Employee Assistant of the Department of Immigration and Emigration on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 6,000/-. The complainant has handed over the documents on 30.07.2024 to obtain a passport after paying the Rs. 10,000/- which is the required government fee. When he came to collect the passport on 12.12.2024, the suspect has solicited Rs. 6,000/- from the complainant to get the passport ready. Accordingly, the suspect was arrested at around 1.45 p.m. on 12.12.2024 inside the Postal Branch on the 2nd floor of the Department.

Based on a complaint made by a businessman of Dalupotha, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested the above Police Officer at around 12.20 p.m. on 29 November 2024 inside the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Negombo.

Based on a complaint made by a woman of Mattumagala area in Ragama, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested the Principal of a primary school in Ragama on charges of soliciting and accepting Rs. 150,000/- as a bribe to admit the complainant’s child into Grade one for the year 2025. The arrest was made at around 4.00 p.m. on 07.11.2024 inside the school office.

Based on a complaint made by a resident of Illawatura, Gampola, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested a Chief Police Inspector attached to the Gampola HQI office on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000/-. According to the complainant, the Chief Inspector has solicited the bribe to meet the fuel and travelling expenses to come to the Bribery Commission on 25.10.2024 to give a statement to the Commission in relation to an investigation conducted against the complainant. He was arrested at around 5.25 p.m. on 23.10.2024 at a cafeteria near Nuwara Eliya town.

Based on a complaint made by a resident in Chenkalady, Batticaloa, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested a Deputy Commissioner of the Eastern Province Inland Revenue Department on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 200,000/-. According to the complainant, he has bought a 65 perch land in the Sathurukondan area in Batticaloa for Rs. 10 Mn. and has paid Rs. 0.6 Mn as its stamp duty. Later, the Provincial Department of Inland Revenue has informed him that the assessed value of the land is Rs. 26.5 Mn and the government fee payable for it with a fine is Rs. 0.85 Mn. A Deputy Commissioner of the Department has then solicited Rs. 200,000/- to do the needful to bring down the said amount to Rs. 200,000/-. The Deputy Commissioner was arrested at the Eastern Province Inland Revenue Department in Batticaloa at around 12.45 p.m. on 15.10.2024 while accepting the bribe.

Based on a complaint made by a businessman in Polgahawela, Investigation Officers of the Commission arrested the Deputy Commissioner  (Bus & Lorry Transfer Division), a Development Assistant at the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) and a broker on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe. The bribe has been solicited to transfer the ownership of three buses to the complainant after the completion of their leasing payments.   The arrest was made between 3.20 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. on 04.10.2024 at DMT premises.

Based on a complaint received by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Commission’s Investigation Officers arrested a Sergeant attached to Keselwatta Police Station on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bottle of arrack worth Rs. 3640/- as a bribe and a Sanitary Labourer serving for a Cleaning Service Agency for aiding and abetting him. According to the complaint, the arrested Sergeant has solicited the bribe to get the signature and seal of the officer handling court matters to claim the money of the reward the Sri Lanka Police had presented to the complainant for arresting drunk drivers while he was serving attached to Welikada Police Station. The two suspects were arrested at 1.50 p.m. and 1.35 p.m. on 26.09.2024 at the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court No. 07 premises.

Based on a complaint made by a person in Kanchikuda, Batticaloa, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested a Sergeant and a Police Constable attached to the Police Special Branch, Kokkadicholai Sub-unit. According to the complainant, the two officers have solicited and accepted Rs. 2,000/- as a bribe in exchange for not taking legal action against him for illegal sand mining and transporting. They have subsequently solicited Rs. 2,000/- promising to extend support to continue the sand mining without a license. The arrest was made at 12.35 p.m. on 25.09.2024 in the Aruppan area while accepting the bribe.

Based on a complaint made by a resident in Thalawatthegedara, Potuhera, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested a Sergeant of Pothuhera Police Station at 2.52 p.m. on 19.09.2024 on allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 5,000/-. According to the complainant, he has requested a Police Report to apply for a job, and the Sergeant has solicited Rs. 5,000/- as a bribe to issue it without mentioning details of the cases pending against him on illicit liquor and drug allegations. However, since the complainant refrained from giving the bribe upon receiving the Police Report, the Sergeant has stated that he will initiate legal action for illegal liquor and drug allegations and solicited Rs. 5,000/ again to halt such action. The Sergeant was arrested at the Hela Bojun Cafeteria before the Pothuhera Police Station while accepting the bribe.

Based on a complaint made by a resident of Kiriwattuduwa, Homagama, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested an Assistant Driving Instructor of a driving school in Boralesgamuwa for soliciting and accepting Rs. 5,000/- as a bribe. According to the complainant, it was solicited to expedite the processing of his permanent driving license for the temporary heavy vehicle license the Department of Motor Traffic issued him. The suspect was arrested at 4.25 p.m. on 03.09.2024 inside the driving school office he is running in Boralesgamuwa.
