An illegally registered Mitsubishi Jeep taken into the custody of Sri Lanka Customs on court order

Based on some information received, the Confidential and Intelligence Investigation Unit of this Commission conducted investigations regarding vehicles that did not undergo the Customs clearance process and one such Mistibishi Jeep taken into custody was produced before the Court on 11.10.2024. Colombo Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamaga ordered Sri Lanka Customs to take the vehicle into their custody for further investigations.

The illegal registration of the vehicle has caused approximately a loss of Rs. 5 million in tax revenue. The Court ordered the Confidential and Intelligence Investigation Unit to expedite the investigations and produce the officers of Sri Lanka Customs who assisted in importing the vehicle and the officers of the Department of Motor Traffic who assisted in registering it before the Court. The case was scheduled for hearing on 17.01.2025.
