A person offered bribe to Police Officer given prison sentence, suspened for 15 years

The Colombo High Court, on 26.08.2024, delivered a two year’s rigorous imprisonment, suspended for 15 years to Pradeep Upul Kumara, a resident of Badalkumbura Dodangahadura, for offering a bribe of Rs. 5,000/- to a public servant for abstaining from taking legal action against him for the offence he committed in Ethimale.

Indictments have been served against the accused for offering a Rs. 5000/- bribe to a public servant, Police Inspector H. P. Sarath Kumara, as an inducement or gratification for abstaining from taking legal action against the accused for the offence of possessing 6 kilograms of cannabis and cultivating cannabis.

The accused has pleaded guilty to all the charges, and the Court also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs. 5000/- and another three months’ prison sentence if he doesn’t pay the fine. Further, the Court ordered the confiscation of money offered as the bribe.
Deputy Director General of the Commission, Attorney Asitha Anthony, appeared for the prosecution.
