A suspended prison sentence of two years and fine imposed on a Grama Niladhari in Pelellegama, Ratnapura

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption conducted a raid and arrested a Grama Niladhari of Pelellegama, Ratnapura for soliciting Rs. 15,000/- and accepting Rs. 10,000/- to issue the Certificate of Residence.  Subsequently, indictments were served against him before the High Court.

The accused pleaded guilty on 06.07.2024, and High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja delivered a sentence of two-year rigorous imprisonment for each charge to run concurrently and suspended for five years. In addition, the court ordered a fine of Rs. 20,000/- or, in default of its payment, a six-month lenient prison sentence. The court also ordered a fine of Rs. 10,000/- in terms of Section 26 of the Bribery Act.
