The National Programme of International Anti-Corruption Day-2024 organised by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) was held under the patronage of His Excellency the President on 9th December at the BMICH. The Chairman of the Commission welcomed the invitees and briefed the programme objectives. The CIABOC themed this year’s programme as “Stand United to Break the Chain of Corruption”. While emphasising the importance of an International Anti-Corruption Day, the Chairman pointed out that the Anti-Corruption Act, No. 9 of 2023 is a turning point in the fight against corruption in Sri Lanka. Adding to the speech, the Chairman said that the effectiveness of the Act depends on its successful implementation, and expanding the scope of the Commission, strengthening the Commission’s mechanism and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability are important in this regard.
His Excellency the President, participating as the chief guest of the national celebration, reiterated the need for a collective commitment to make Sri Lanka a nation with minimal bribery and corruption. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also emphasised the need for a complete transformation of the entire state system to rebuild the country and stated that even if there are enough laws and institutions, citizens will not enjoy justice if the officers there fail to implement them properly. Adding to the speech, the President said that everyone should be committed to making Sri Lanka a nation with minimal bribery and corruption, and we will be able to add value to the expectations of its citizens only through that.
Judge of the Supreme Court, Yasantha Kodagoda, PC delivered the keynote speech here. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also presented appointment letters to 15 Integrity Officers at this national event.
