A workshop on functions of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption was held for 40 Prison Officers on 21.08.2018.
The Corruption and Bribery Prevention Unit of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption was initiated on 17.08.2018 (last Friday) with the patronage of the Chairman of the Commission and the participation of Commissioners, Director Generaland the staff.
The training programme on Procurement Procedures organized by the CIABOC for its legal officers, investigation and other officers was held yesterday at the Taj Samudra Hotel Colombo on 9am to 5pm. This event was funded by the EASTWEST.
Today High Court Judge Mrs. Champa Rajarathnam sentenced A.T.M. Aris & M.A. Mohideen for 2 years Rigorous Imprisonment suspended it for 20 years & a fine of Rs. 10,000/- for each accused over bribery charges which were levelled against them for conspiring to offer Rs. 4Mn & for offering Rs. 1.5Mn to Roshan Sanjeewa then OIC attached to Sapugaskanda Police. Both accused pleaded guilty.
The Global Expert Group Meeting (EGM)on the Jakarta Principles co-hosted by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in Sri Lanka, UNODC, and UNDP, Sri Lanka successfully concluded on 27 July 2018 in Colombo. The Expert Group Meeting was convened to develop a “Commentary on the Jakarta Statement on Principles for Anti-Corruption Agencies”. The Commentary, which will be known as the Colombo Commentary to the Jakarta Principles (COCO) will be finalized by the UNODC in the near future. It will provide guidance and clarity on the Jakarta Principles asrequested by state parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) in order to strengthen the effectiveness and independence of national anti-corruption authorities.
The Authorized Investigation Officers of CIABOC have apprehended a Senior Labour Officer and a Labour Officer for soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs.8,000/- and Rs.1,000 respectively from the complainant to attend and give evidence in a trial held in Labour Tribunal – Nuwara Eliya. The arrest was taken place at the time of obtaining the bribe from the complainant.
The Global Expert Group Meeting(EGM) on the Jakarta Principles concluded successfully today with delegates agreeing on the content of the Colombo Commentary on the Jakarta Principles. International anti-corruption experts from over 30 countries engaged in vibrant and intense discussions for 3 days on ways and methods to ensure anti-corruption agencies are effective and independent.
Following a successful day of discussions yesterday, day two of the Global Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the Jakarta Principles began this morning at the Taj Samudra.
